Is this a rooster?

This is one of our friend's chickens. We gave them one of our extra roosters a few months back bc they didn't have one. Went over to feed them today bc they are out of town and saw this "hen" mount another one. Was just curious if it is in fact a rooster too

Looks like a hen to me. Could have been a dominance behavior you witnessed.

Okay, I thought that might be what happened but I was a little shocked because I've never seen that before!

It's a hen. Sometimes hens like to be dominant like that. They don't necessarily "mount" them, like a rooster would, but they like to peck other hens lower in the pecking order, which might look like "mounting".

Yup that looks like a hen to me, yours looks pretty round in shape.

I have 2 Black Plymouth Rocks who were aggressive with the others, and I had the same thought when one of them was maturing
