I got 6 straight run blue Cochins from mcMurray hatchery in April. 1 of them was very light compared to the others and had what looked like yellow feathering around the neck, so I thought maybe it was going to look like a lemon blue Cochin. It is now 8(?) weeks old and I was wrong about the yellow, but it is almost white compared to the others...very light gray like the fireplace ashes I have for them to dust bath in, and when I was looking up images of blue Cochin cockerels (because as luck would have it I believe 5 out of the 6 are males), photos that look just like my little guy are listed as "self blue". What the heck does self blue mean, and do you think that will help him get a home other than the freezer? I can't keep any of the roosters :(.

Self blue is another name for lavender. It would be an even color all over the body, unlike Andalusian blue you have with blue/black/splash, where the head, hackles and saddle feathers are darker than the body color.

There are many shades of blue as well, from very light to almost black.

I have a lavender bantam Cochin from Ideal plus two daughters of hers with my porcelain d'Anver roosters-they are also lavender (porcelain is just mille fleur with the lavender gene added). The chick below is self blue/lavender.

Thanks for the explanation. I will try to post a pic tomorrow to see what everyone thinks too. I was just too impatient to wait to post.
