Is this a stupid idea for new threads?

Nope
Would it be silly to start several different threads, each with the purpose of people posting pictures of their stock from a specific well known hatchery? Like a thread for photos of poultry from Meyer, another one for Mcmurrey, another for Privett, etc? I know when I first started lurking I formed the impression that chickens from hatcheries would be horrible, so it was a big relief when I'd stumble across pictures of a bird from a hatchery, and I could not only recognize the bird as a chicken, but determine what breed it was supposed to represent. I know a lot of people say it's best to get stock from a private breeder rather than from a hatchery, but I honestly think the average chicken owner just wants a bird that makes eggs and looks a bit like the pretty, fancy breeds you find in books, and different threads with stock from specific hatcheries might reassure them that, though the chickens may never win ribbons, they'll at least be pretty birds for the most part.

I did do a search, but didn't find any threads like this. There's one Ideal one that's close, but it doesn't really start off quite right since it begins by asking for specific breeds rather than just anything and everything Ideal, and there are several pages of people bickering back and forth about the merits, or lack thereof, of hatchery birds (a bit ashamed to say I added to that

). I'd rather the threads be more like the different breed threads, with emphasis on just showing off photos of what you've gotten from hatcheries. I think it would help a lot of people who get on and ask, "What do birds from (insert hatchery) look like?" I don't know about anyone else, but I see that question a lot.

Would this not be a good idea? Or is it something that's already being done that I missed in my search?

While I have no opinion one way or the other about hatchery specific threads, I have read that in breeding to the standards that sometimes a breeds production may suffer. I wonder if any of us who have specific breeds realize or care that this is the case. Though as being new to chickens I don't know if I'd know I was getting fewer eggs.

Here are some hatchery links that are already started.

Hope
this helps.

Thanks!

I found those threads when I did a quick search, too. The reason I pretty much ignored them is they seem to center more around posting reviews of a hatchery, and I like the idea of a thread that focuses more on pictures than anything else.

Yeah sadly even the breed threads don't have many photos - I agree though, in that it would help to focus more on photos of breeds for any hatchery.

Gosh darn it, I thought I had . . . the hazards of keeping multiple tabs open. Sorry!

P.S. Um . . . so can mods move threads? Or do I need to ask it to get deleted and start a new one? I don't want to double post.

P.P.S . . . well that last P.S. was silly when I can just ask them myself . . . I'm spacey today
