Is This Abnormal Or Am I Just Paranoid

Hi guys,

Sorry for so many threads in less than 24 hours. I think I'm extra paranoid now, but can anyone tell me if this sounds normal or is something I should worry about. I had one chick die last night for no reason I could discern. Today, my RIR girl is sitting. You wouldn't think it's that strange, but she's been very active/running around since I got her. Seeing her sitting is odd. And all the others are under the warmer and she's sitting far away by herself. I'm getting a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. Any advice or supportive care I can give?

Also might be worth mentioning she hatched on the 30th (hatchery, not at my house). I can see a lot more of the grownup instincts coming out. They're scratching and pecking, trying to fly a little and stuff like that, so I don't know if this is just a new behavior developing and I don't need to worry. She's back over with the others now, but not under the heater. She's sitting next to it.

She went under the heater for a few minutes and now she's up eating again. Some of the others are sitting too. And I think I saw others sitting yesterday as well. Maybe they're just practicing roosting? Please tell me it's fine. :hit

Also, should I be leaving them alone for a while? I left them alone for the majority of the first day so they could acclimate for the first day, and I've been trying to hold them each a few times a day so that they get used to me/bond with me. I don't want to stress them out too much though. I just want to make sure that they love me...any tips for training names? If I come to the box and coo out "Baaaaabieeeeeees" they come out from under the brooder plate, but I'm not seeing individual name recognition yet. I say it to them when I take them out of the box. They don't seem interested in treats though, so it's hard to follow traditional training methods. Maybe I just don't have the right food. Am I trying too early? I really appreciate any advice. I just want them all to be healthy and happy.

Take a deep breath, they seem completely fine. They wont eat treats for now, that is also normal. At this age chickens do not respond to a name, the best way to get them to come is to associate a noise with food. You shouldn't have a problem with taking them out every once in a while.Congrats on your new peepers!

I gave them grit already. I got conflicting information about if I should wait or not, so I just went ahead. Figured they'd prefer real food and wouldn't fill up on the stuff. Should I take it out?

Good idea on the live worms. I think they'll respond better to something that's moving.

If they eat anything besides chick starter they need the grit, it won't hurt for them to have it.
Those worms are the key to buying the attention of those babies. I absolutely promise.:)
