I am building a 3' x 5' coop for someone. they currently have just 3 hens but want to get 2 more. will this be enough room for them?

i am going to put in 2 nest boxes just in case a hen goes broody(they have a bantam X hen)

it'll have an access door for cleaning and run door of course. any other suggestions?

sounds great for three, and should be okay for 5 IF they get out to free range some. I'd add a third box, though.

That would only be enough space for them if they were allowed to free range during the day. You certainly don't want to cram them in to a space suited for fewer chickens, because this will cause problems between the chickens and headaches for you.

If it is only for them at night, though, that should prove sufficient. I'd go bigger anyways, but if you can't, then this could work.

Trouble is, when weather is bad in the winter, and they don't want to go out, they will be quite crowded. You want more than the minimum 4 sq ft per bird in bad weather. If they start pecking you will be hard pressed to stop it.

I would say cover the outside run with a roof it keeps the yard from turning to mud and stinking. Hang the watering cans from chains of brackets at neck level and they too will stay far cleaner.
