Is This Bumblefoot? *WITH PICS*

DMSO
sickbyc.gif

Horrid stuff.... tastes like putrid garlic. I cannot touch any animal that has had it used on it within 24-48 hours.

I think I would try every other treatment available before using DMSO. I sure would not be collecting eggs or using for meat anything that had has contact with a bird treated with the stuff. Solvents belong on metal not critters.

I know nothing about DMSO - but I agree that if you can treat it without surgery, that's the way to go! I know I called every vet in this area and they said they do not vet poultry and will not prescribe any meds to treat them. We're fairly new to this area and haven't established a relationship with a vet yet, but maybe your vet will be more willing to help.

I started the Pen-G injections this morning. I'm really hoping it will do the trick.

Please let us know what you end up doing.

Please note that the source information on the DMSO compounded with an antibiotic are veterinary sources... you must consult a vet for this med and not try to DIY such yourself. The info posted may be helpful to the vet (especially if a non_vet... if you take veterinary source info into a non-avian vet then they will be more open to help your bird)

Well, I haven't tried anything yet, I haven't had time! I'm working 3 12 hour shifts 7PM-7AM, but tonight is my last night, so I will start treatments first thing tomorrow. I took some better pics, and I will post them first thing tomorrow as well. I will be doing warm salt water soaks first, as this shouldn't hurt him if, by some miracle, it isn't bumblefoot.... but I'm pretty sure it is. You guys can help me determine a better verdict when the better pics are posted.
Untill then, it'll be a nice, warm salt water soak first thing in the morning- hopefully before it gets too hot. I guess that's where I stand right now... thanks for all your help so far! BYC is AWESOME!!!

*I'm still trying to reassure myself that if it comes to the surgery, I can do it. I guess it'd be silly to ask what the mortality rate of bumblefoot is, huh?

Sorry, just a worried momma*

It looks swollen. I would soak it in epsom salt. I just had a case of bumblefoot and her foot was a lot bigger than that but you may have caught it early.
