I am fairly sure this is bumble foot.
I friend of mine was recently given some pooorly taken care of chooks.
One was limping, so I asked to take a closer look.
When I saw the foot, not only were the nails 4-5 inches long, but both legs were white and swollen and lumpy looking.
The first step was to cut the nails, so she did, but she cut one to short and it started bleeding quite a bit.
I told my friend that I thought that this was bubblefoot and that she should isolate the chook in some dry, warm bedding. (The chook was cold and shivering.) This poor chicken was obviosly in terribly shape. Any advice or comments would be great.

the legs being white and bumpy looking makes me think of mites...

hi..i think alot of people here coat the legs with vaseline..i guess it smothers the mites or something..not sure how long you have to keep doing it though....
