I am wondering if this is bumblefoot. I cannot find a dark spot to surgically remove as recommended.

Yes, it's bumble foot! It just hasn't developed a scab or necrosis (not a bad thing).

Soak in Epsom salt water and try getting it to open using a warm wash cloth and pressure or sterile needle if pressure doesn't work.

Empty out liquid, you may need tweezers to extract any pus (will be thicker than with a human, think cheeses) wash out with saline solution or antiseptic like iodine wash then pack with Neosporin WITHOUT PAIN RELIEVER (toxic to chickens!)

Keep as clean and dry as possible and repeat the above until healed!

I hope your baby feels better soon!:hugs

The posted reference thread has no useful information in it.
Agreed with Michelle..that doesn’t look typical.
I don’t think I would treat that with anything other than vet care. You may do more harm than good.

Thank you SO much!!!

You're welcome! In the event you get it open and nothing comes out, clean with antiseptic and post an updated picture as close up as you can get without blurring and as many angles as you can get.

Simply cleaning and emptying it shouldn't make it horribly worse, regardless. We'll all do our best to get you answers and walk you through solutions! :hugs

Bumblefoot is basically just a staph infection, right? So if that toe is abcessed, isn't it bumblefoot by definition? I could be totally wrong here. But either way, you'd treat it the same way: get it to open with a warm compress, drain it, pack it, wrap it. But a vet treatment certainly couldn't hurt!

Good luck with your bird!
