I was playing with the chicks today and noticed this one chick has a pink spot below her ear. I was concerned, and took her out to look closer, and realized she has an almost identical spot on the other side in the same place. Is this a Barred Rock thing or something to do with feathering out? I haven't noticed it on any of the other chicks, but it's strange that there are two in the same spot. The chicks are definitely getting a bit crowded where they are, but I spend a lot of time watching them and have never seen them picking on each other. We're moving them to the bigger brooder this week, as soon as the older ones go out to the coop, so it won't be long before they will have a ton more space. Strange thing though is that this particular chick seems to be the boss. I'd be surprised if she was getting picked on, but of course it's possible. Is there anything I can/should do about it?

It was really hard to get a good picture. The spot is definitely more pink than it looks in this picture, but not red or raw.

Looks like her ear lobes. Most chickens have fleshy earlobes that very in color from red, white, and blue depending on the breed.

Well to me it looks like the earlobe is right above the pink spot and is kind of black and whorly, if that makes sense? The pink part below that is just skin. But if that's a normal part of her ear that's good to know. None of the other birds have a bare spot by their ears and this one didn't (that I noticed) until today either, so I thought I'd better double check.

sgtmom52, does she look like a little roo to you? It would explain the bossiness and the fact she's always the first out in front of the others. But, she is one of the few we have that are guaranteed pullets, so if that's true I'll have to call up the breeder and exchange her. Won't know for sure for a few more weeks though I guess.
