OkChickens - I am definitely making sure we are building / fencing with plenty of room for more chickens, I just need my husband to realize that 6 isn't already too many

They're getting a very roomy horse barn-turned coop and lots of running about space. Should be plenty of room for chicken math

Is it not so hard to find a home for a rooster? What if you want to find one where he won't be eaten?

Ugh, I know. I already feel bad enough having given them money to keep it up.

(I know a lot of folks here won't understand this, but I'm vegan and while I feel comfortable with the fact that we're going to start eating our own eggs when we start getting them ((morally, anyway, I am still weirded out by the idea of eating an egg after 8 years!)) I'm still feeling horrible about supporting the system.)

Anyone know how much it costs to neuter a rooster?

My neighbors may need to get over the noise, we are legally allowed to have a rooster, and, after all, many of them have dogs. I wonder how upsetting this would be....

IF this is a Barred Rock chick, I think it's a girl. Both sexes have white spots on their heads, but the girls have smaller, more defined white spots. The boys have less well-defined white blotches on their heads.
