is this cochin pure or a mix?

OK I went to check the wee little wings and I see two rows of feathers, one row longer than the other, and the< feathers all look pretty even side by side -

Would this make him a boy?

You can't judge cochins when they are that tiny. They take sooo long to mature. I've had some really dumpy looking chicks grow up to be exceptional. If he has a straight comb (pea is dominant I think) then he is pure cochin.

I have to jump in here and ask a question. I got some supposedly pure bred cochins from ideal. I think this was crossed with a brahma, but it has a single comb. Any thoughts?

(I don't mean to take over this thread. Just wanted to post this quick question).

Here's a pic:

It looks like this, but buff colored.

Cochins should NOT have pea combs, only single combs, if it has any other type of comb then it is crossed and not pure.

Yeah, I know cochins have single combs, but I don't think this is in any way a purebred cochin. I thought it was crossed with brahma, but doesn't have the pea comb of a brahma. I am still just trying to figure out what it is.

Is it a banty or large fowl? It seems more likely that you got a pure buff brahma with the wrong comb type. Buff columbian aren't terribly common in cochins. Do you have a pic?

HappyMtn- I don't have a picture of her, but she looks just like the red one I posted, only buff. However, she has a more rounded cushion now than compared to when she was younger.

So she has the columbian markings around her neck and tail? I'm betting it's just a brahma. If she is truely buff columbian with a single comb....I think you have the start of a mille fleur project

Um.... could we please get back to my original post... I will have a new pic of the chick in question up soon and don't want to confuse anyone!

thanks
