I have a young hen who has only recently started laying but she's laying at night time when on her roost and the eggs have been falling to the ground and cracking. Is this common in some hens when they begin to lay? If so do they learn to use nesting boxes in the future?

Yes, it happens a lot. She should eventually get her egg cycle synchronized to the morning/daylight time of day to lay her eggs. But it still happens occasionally that a hen will pass her egg while on the perch when she has no conscious awareness that she needs to lay.

I just finished breakfasting on two eggs I recently reclaimed from under a perch that had been dropped during the early part of the dark morning. Waste not, want not.

Good to know she'll figure it out. And the eggs haven't been going to waist the dogs have been getting to clean up the mess lol
