We have been looking at buying a used coop for the spring (will build one of we can’t find one). Here is one we think might work. We have a time set to go look at it. I am confident that we can make any needed accommodations. They are refurbished prefabs built as one big coop, both parts 4x4. Please let me know of anything that looks like it is a bad idea. I already see I want new locks. These are the only pics I have, will take more when we get there if needed. Also, how do you suggest disinfecting a coop? Thanks for your advice & opinions.

From the pics I would say with a little work it can be upgraded, as long as there are no rotted areas, make sure you give the sides etc a good thumping to ensure the wood isn't punky or rotted. If the wood breaks or splinters you will know it's rotted - don't buy. But if solid otherwise negotiate a price and purchase.

I would remove those legs and just set the whole unit on cement blocks.

If the roof is bad you can use asphalt roll instead of shingles. A strip of this along the hinged nest box and the attached section will also alleviate any leaking.

The hatch on the addition can be easily reinforced, and a vent added to the wall.

Slap on some paint and you're good to go.

As for cleaning wash it with dettol and water mixture. Let dry.

One thing I would do is put more slope on the attachment. Since you have some studs and sheeting from another project you can easily do this.

I'm dubious as to whether it's worth it vs putting the work into something you built yourself. But if you decided to go with it, @U_Stormcrow has given you good advice.

I think we will go see it anyway just so I have some comparison in case we see any more online. I’ll also be looking for coop builds using whole pallets (I have one bookmarked here that I like a lot). Want minimum 4x8 or 6x6 so I can get 4-5 chickens for it next year & 2-3 more the year after.

Take your tape measure, a camera, and pad of paper to take notes.

It looks like a good ‘starter coop’ meaning within 2 years or less it will be falling apart and you will not be able to refurbish it because of rust, rot, mold, and decay. Been there, done that. However it has potential to get you started and learn how to keep poultry. You will need lots of ventilation especially in warm weather. Hinges exposed to weather will rust/wood rots. My neighbor had similar coop design and hers got penetrated by predators due to flimsy exterior nest box design. Raccoon got through fence and right through rotted exterior nest boxes. Be aware of that risk. Good luck. Chickens bring much joy in our family!

So update: The lady took the coop off Craigslist & never texted me to tell me. Needless to say we did not go to visit.

Still keeping an eye out on the over e-z medium coop on Craigslist to see if they drop the price.

Also have the custodians at my job saving pallets for me. Got 3 beautiful new ones yesterday, hoping by spring I’ll have 10 in case we need to build a coop ourselves. Chick order & hatching eggs are planned for June so we still have 6 months to figure it out!

Thanks for all of your help! Doesn’t seem like we missed out on anything I feel bad about. I believe things happen for a reason!
