Rocks have yellow skin and Marans have white skin.
Check legs to see if yellow or white.

Thank you.

Ths legs are white but I saw the eggs, very light brown, almost same as a sexlink's egg. She's just trying to get rid of those cuckoos and get dark hatching eggs to start over again. She said she had been trying to get good ones for 2 years now, but they all lay light eggs. No good maran breeders here in northern Cali.

Based on the shape of the beak and the more broken feather banding, i was leaning toward marans myself, but was going to ask about the leg color. With white legs she's certainly not a BR.

I have some eggs from my moms sexlinks from the farm store, and they're darker than my BR eggs. Marans are supposed to be a 4 or darker but that's just for sop as far as im aware, doesnt mean ppl breed them to make sure they maintain that egg color.

She assured me they are cuckoo marans. Here are her eggs. She said they have no speckles she was nice enough to tell me that if I am looking for dark eggs not to buy hers.

That looks like my Cuckoo Marans egg, and she is hatchery quality. Her cuckoo pattern is different from the bird pictured above, but if she has white legs and lays an egg of that color she is probably a Cuckoo Marans. She does have that fluffy Marans shape.

Here is a picture of my hen and one of her eggs:

Btw, both Marans and BRs have single combs, so that isn’t a way to distinguish between the breeds.

As stated above, unless you go to a breeder that breeds specifically for egg colors, chances are you won’t get the deep/rich egg color. We have a BCM that I got from a local breeder and she was pretty expensive ($18 as a day old chick) so her eggs better be beautiful when she starts laying 🤣😅

How old is the chick now? I got 2 FBCM from a breeder also. Bought them at 4 weeks old $15 each. Hopefully the eggs will be dark. I bought a roo at that time and he is pretty big. They are around 12 weeks old now.

I let it go. I don't want to add a hen then later on get rid of it b/c not what I want. I'll wait. I will wait if 1 chicken go broody, I'll get dark hatching eggs.
