Is this fact or fiction?.....( About Barred Rock hens)

Don't worry, it is a common misconception that hens need a rooster to lay eggs. The fact is, hens lay eggs with or without a rooster. The eggs won't be fertile without a rooster, so if you want chicks from your eggs, you will need a rooster. If you just want eggs, you don't. Whether you have a rooster or not, whether the eggs are fertile or not, they can be eaten with no perceptible difference in nutritional quality or taste.

The laughter you are seeing on this board is all good natured, I assure you. I have to admit, I chuckled a bit too. Don't let it discourage you from asking questions, no matter how elementary they may seem. Chortles aside, everybody is willing to answer your questions.

If I could take the ribbing you get as a newbie in the army. This will be a piece of cake.

Sorry to say this, but. . .

My hens must produce a LOT of eggs with all the roosters I have.

though. We all learn this at some point.

It's a perfectly reasonable question. In fact, it's one that I get asked about all the time. Many people keep laying flocks without a rooster, and factory egg farms don't have any roosters at all.

Teachers get that one wrong as well. I'm on a set of wheels as well (had to stop going to walmart, too many poor underware choices on display, don't people realize that's eye-level for some of us?!?).
