would this homemade feed be suitable for day old chicks to start up on ?
it consists of
oats ( white and brow ) , mixed dried fruit ( banana , coconut ) , mixed seeds ( sunflower , pumpkin and few others ) , nuts ( peanut , walnut in small quantity ) and for protein i will add dried egg yolk .
let me know plz and hopefully my eggs do hatch tomorrow
thanks

I would not take chances with home made feed. It's tricky to get the ratio of protein and other nutrients exactly right for growing and developing chicks. I'd rather benefit from the research that others have done and go with commercially available feed. I also use the medicated (amprolium only) to build up their immunity to coccidiosis.

This is just my preference. i'm sure that there are others that would be perfectly fine with winging it with your own feed. It depends on how comfortable you are with that.

Is that a ground mix or a whole mix? If you feed this you need to give the chicks grit. If you feed this you might want yo look into something for coccidiosis too.

We feed our own mix of grains but we always start the chicks out with store bought feed.

I agree with the post above and since I'm a complete newbie it sure is easy to go to the feed store and buy a bag of crumbles!

But maybe if you look in the "feeding and watering your flock' area this question has already been asked/answered or you can ask it there.

good luck

I rely completely on store bought food for my babues. I would rather not take the chance with them not getting the right amount than end up losing them. I would stick with the scientists but if you feel comfortable with homemade feed then go for it. Make sure it follows the requirements for a growing chick though.

If you want to do homemade chick feed, you'll probably get better feedback on this board:

I am also a newb, but I think most of what you listed would be okay as an occasional treat when the chicks get older (although I would probably give them fresh fruit instead of dried) but I don't know if it would meet all the nutritional requirements of growing chicks. And it would have to be ground up super-super fine (and/or you would have to offer grit) for the chicks to digest it.
