Come to think of it, if it was a larger hawk, sure thing. Only experience I have is with Cooper's Hawks that left slices penetrating through my one brabanter's wings going into her torso. She also had a hurt leg afterwards as well.

In my sleep addled brain I was just thinking of a red tail is razor feet, not the talons they actually possess.

I would have thought that was a redtail or some other Buteo. A Coopers Hawk Talon s surprisingly narrow and razor sharp. That is the talon of a Buteo I would have thought. I cannot explain the wetness except that it probably was bleeding and other fluids in the struggle. I have never had an issue with a redtail that I was aware of, but I did find a blue copper marans hen dead with an identical wound. Right in the back. I always thought it must have been a redtail although anything I have ever witnessed (which is considerable because I used to have pigeons), involved a Coopers Hawk. They are the main chicken killers usually. But not always.
