So, this is our first winter with chickens. I have tried my best but I’m afraid our rooster, Prince, has frostbite. Any thoughts? What do I do if this is frostbite?

The blackened tips look like mild frostbite. It may heal up or he may lose the tips depending on the amount of damage. I personally leave them alone. Handling the damaged tissue can cause more damage. Most of my big comb roosters lose the points by their second winter because here it gets really cold. Moisture and not enough air exchange can cause frostbite at warmer temperatures.

It does look like the smallest amount of frost bite and some say you can put vaseline on their combs to help with frost bite but I just let it be and twist off the scab when it heals. I did have an old english bantam get frost bite and he lost the tips of a few on his comb.
