Is this frostbite?

My sapphire gem showed up today looking like this. It was very cold last night (30 f--compared to most other nights) and I'm just wondering if this is pecking order issues or frostbite...or something else. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think it’s dried blood from pecking. I don’t think 30 is low enough for frostbite on a hen with a comb that size. I had a rooster with enormous wattles and comb and his wattles froze completely solid—he actually almost died from infection but was ok. He’s since passed away though. To prevent frostbite you can rub Vaseline or vitamin E on larger combs and wattles. I’ve heard it’s a myth that that helps but I always did it and had to do it for my rooster anyway because his comb got crazy dry from the cold. It’s worth a try!
