For space and timing reasons, I am currently sitting in front of my 2’ by 7’ outdoor brooder, where I have just combined two three-week-old turkey poults (I suspect male and female) who had been living in a dog kennel inside the run with the chickens after the female poult was scalped by a chick slightly older, and seven 10-day-old chicks and four two-week-old guineas who have already been brooded together indoors. The female poult has been very loud since I brought her home, I think because she feels insecure with just one other bird for company. Now she seems to be in heaven with all the chicks. The male poult is primarily ignoring the other chicks and keeping to one side of the brooder. The smaller chicks come up to him and forage alongside him and he doesn’t react. I have seen him do that puffy dominant dance toward them some and it worries me. Both poults are huge compared to the other chicks but the turkey have seemed so peaceable so far, I thought I’d give it a try. Will this be a problem? I know there’s no way to know for sure, just looking for others’ experiences. If the male poult is going to cause trouble, will it make for a very unhappy female if I separate him and leave her with the chicks?
