This is a year old Australorp hen. Any input as to if she is quality enough to show? I am leaning more towards fairs, because I am not sure if she is good enough for the bigger shows.

If you have read the Standard and know that your girl has no disqualifiers then by all means show her. It is an excellent opportunity to ask a judge about your girl, what is good about her and what she may be lacking and how to improve on it in her off spring. You can interact with other breeders and learn even more.

She looks good in those pictures. It's hard to tell about anything under the feathers, but as long as she is near the right weight and has a good straight keel she should be fine. Of course, you never know what the judge(s) will say. Once I had one of my show hens start molting right before a show, so I grabbed a random replacement hen. That hen won grand champion.

I say take her and even if she does not do well, talk to the judge to find out why. She certainly will not get anything if you leave her in the coop!

Anyone know where I can find American breed standards? I can only find the standards on the Aussie site and thought it best to compare her top the US standards. Or, does the US use the Aussie standard?

I really think I will try her at some shows and see how she does. She is my favorite hen and, in my eyes, the nicest I have.

Thanks!
