We had a small water dish for the birds, and he somehow drowned himself in it. We've re-arranged the incubator to try and prevent it from happening again.

Oh, so sad. What breed was he?
You could go to the fabric store and get some net and fasten it on with a rubber band.

Marbles in even the shallowest water dish for the first week with quail dont worry too much as they are modern day dodos that aim for darwin awards. I once lost one (nearly two had I not realised in time) because I changed their water bowl to one of the same design but a different colour and put it in a slightly different place in their coup and they didnt realise it was water. Took a day and a bit before I twigged what was happening and my favourite racing over to me squawking blue murder, unfortunately too late for the ine with heatstroke.
