I am new to the whole slaughtering of my dinner thing and I feel like I just could not flat out lie to someone.
It seems like a great way to get some extra meat for my family though, I am surprised more people don't do this.

I don't think it's too bad UNLESS someone has posted on Craigslist or elsewhere that their rooster is a pet and is not for eating. Many who post "free roosters" know what can happen and just don't have the heart to dispatch the roos themselves (or don't know how). Above all if they ask what the rooster is for just be honest. If they don't ask, they probably already know a crock pot or freezer camps is in his future.

I think a lot of folks don't want to know what's going to happen. I mean, in their heart they know, but as long as you don't discuss it they can imagine Roo roaming free with a large flock of hens, in a field of green grass............

I'd go with the if they don't ask, don't tell, but be honest if they ask. And remember, Free Food Tastes Better!

As far as logistics, you might want to get ahold of booker81--she's picked up a lot of free roos on CL and can tell you what she does for quarantine, etc.

I like this last idea to be straight forward on CL. I think you will still get plenty of responses. In the past I have had some roosters I wouldn't have minded if they where humanely slaughtered, but there were a few cool roos I hoped would have their own hens.

Just wanted to say that I am not opposed to the idea that my extra roos end up feeding a family, I just cant raise them from chicks and then do the deed myself. My cousin even ask one time if I would raise some meat birds for her for the same reason.

Ive thought about doing this as well. But in my area it seems no one wants their roos eaten. Idk. Definitly just post a new ad. If you get nothing, or only a few, just watch for more free rooster ads and check that they dont say 'pet only'

The only thing that is wrong is to promise the bird a good home when you intend to eat it.

I would just be silent on the issue and if they ask, tell them that you butcher very humanely and he will never know what happen.

Take a nice looking cage and handle the birds gently so you don't upset people. If you have lots of calls, make a circuit and drive around and collect all the birds at the same time. That will reduce your gas usage.

By the way, I got some superb geese this year because the woman giving them away did not want them killed. I was able to reassure her that they would be well cared for and live behind a safe fence in my orchard, because that is exactly what is happening with them. I would have never promised her that if I knew I didn't want the birds as keepers.

One note here. If the children are standing there, looking tearful, do not tell them that you are planning to eat their pet. That would be beyond cruel.

As long as your clear with your intentions I see nothing wrong with it. I would rather have a roo eaten than kept alive and treated unkindly.
