Purchased a precious little brown leghorn cockerel? (the old spanish fella at the feed store claims he can sex chickens by holding them upside down by their feet and if they flap they're pullets, if they dont they're cockerels?) Anyway, I guess he's around a week old and my hens are alittle over 6 weeks old. I've made a brooder for "Eddie" in a dog crate for now because I'm scared the ladies will pick on him until he's big enough to defend hisself, what says ye?

He's definitely too small to put in with the girls. Wait until he's at least 10 weeks or older...

They may attack him. IF you do try to put him in there, then do it at night when they are snoring.

Also, your sexing method works... about 50% of the time. There's a good chance that you've got yourself a purty little pullet there, which probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

I got the last 5 BLHs from TSC when I was there. They are now 2-3 weeks old. I can tell 2 of them are roos by the comb - much larger than the other three's of the same age. If you were close to me, I'd donate one of them to you if yours ends up a pullet.

Right now, it looks like freezer boot camp for them and whatever roo BAs I have. Well, except one BA will stay.

I will wait for Eddie to get older before joining the flock, not sure if I can hold off 10 weeks but atleast a month or so. I'm hoping he is a roo b/c brown leghorn roo's are simply beautiful creatures but I would be happy either way. It seems like Priscilla the RIR has taken the role of leader and I would rather Eddie fill that spot and let the hens be hens, poor Pam the EE, bless her heart, she is a gentle soul but always the last to figure out things, not as intuitive as the other ladies

hes so cute! your lucky that you can have roos, my sweet amapola seems to be a guy and i may have to give her-er him, to a farm. I would wait til hes at least 4 weeks old to move him in with the girls, or at least until hes closer to their size.

Do you have a large wire dog crate or could you partition off the area under your current coop housing for him (not sure of the temps. in your area now, or whether you have electricity for a lamp outside???)? I guess I just think it'd be easier to transition him in if they're all use to seeing one another all the time already. But he's so little - guess he needs a brooder right now, which sounds lonely with just one.

low in the low 60's high in the low 80's in central florida right now, i'm thinkin of partitioning some of the coop off and putting him in there and see what happens.

//i have him in a shed in half a dog crate w/ heat lamp right now, i do have a wire dog pen i can put inside the coop like you say.

i cant wait till he gets bigger and feathers out and hopefully gets all the colors of a brown leghorn rooster, he better be real pretty for my wife to put up w/ crowing
