I’ve recently got over a mite infestation and I don’t know if I have anymore or not. Before we had mites all over the walls and chickens losing feathers and I think they are just starting to grow back. I don’t see any mites anymore. Of course Now I see my rooster with broken tail feathers we do have another rooster but he is a silkie and very short so I doubt he’s the problem. I’m still new to chickens and I have a turkey so lots of new experiences. Any ideas?

When you recently had a mite issue what did you use to try to get rid of them?

I don't know what you used for the mites but I use permethrin and have had good luck with it. It can be purchased in most farm stores such as TSC. It takes at least 3 or 4 weekly treatments. It doesn't kill the mites eggs so repeat treatments are necessary to kill the mites when they hatch. I also use poultry dust in the nest boxes. Also some mites only come out at night and feed on the birds at night. I use a headlamp and go out to the coops after the birds have gone to roost and then I have both hands free to inspect the birds. I also take some paper towels out and rub on and under the roost and if there are mites they usually leave streaks on the paper towel. I also put poultry dust in the nest boxes. There is no egg withdrawal period so the eggs are safe to eat. Good luck...

I used Sevin even through it’s not approved for fowl it worked amazing for me I also used other things like DE which I heard don’t work. I haven’t seen anymore mites on chickens or chicken coop so I thought it was over. But now not sure?

I have used Sevin in the past but now as I mentioned previously, I use Permethrin which is approved for use on poultry and there is no egg withdrawal period. I didn't have any luck with DE either. I know some people swear by it and if it works for them that's good. Again, good luck...

Permethrin spray is easiest, least expensive, and works very well. Spinosad also works, and is really expensive. The Sevin is not approved for poultry, so best not used.
Whatever you do, protect yourself! Long sleeves and a N95 face mask are essential!
