So here are pictures of my chickens feet. Is this normal because they are old and someone already told me to put baby oil on their legs to take that white stuff off their legs.

Looking as hard as I can and I think, from the oil reference, you’re saying your chicken has scaley leg? Would need a picture of the front of her legs. Scaley leg mite is normal and can be treated easily before it gets out of hand.

Seems to be scaley leg, you should bathe her legs in warm water and brush gently with a toothbrush. Then dip in coconut oil or put Vaseline on once/twice a day for the next few weeks. With scaley leg, you’re aiming to suffocate the mites.

Greetings NatashaRodriguez,

Part of keeping your chickens healthy involves attending to any parasitic infestations.

Drop the toe painting, and give your chickens a proper foot and leg spa treatment.
  • Fill a dish tub with 1 cup Epsom Salt and warm water up to the chickens thigh.
  • Place the chicken into the warm water, soak for at least 5 minutes.
  • Scrub the legs with a small brush, even a toothbrush will do.
  • Remove the chicken from the water, dry the legs with a towel.
  • Slather, the chickens legs with a petrolatum based ointment, A&D ointment (baby diaper rash ointment), Sulphur8 anti-dandruff hair & scalp conditioner (sold for people at any pharmacy or store), Vaseline mixed with just a tiny bit of Nu-stock ointment (horse ointment with a high sulphur content, sold at feed/farm stores). These are all effective on scaley leg mites.
  • You can soak the chickens legs the first week, this will impact the mites, greatly. Then, just wash the legs under the tap with dish soap, rinse well, and dry. Again, slather the legs with ointment of choice. Do this twice a week for the next 3 weeks. Or, until the legs are healed.
Your hen has a significant scaley leg problem. These parasites are so damaging to the birds health. They can even cause a chicken to become lame and unable to walk, as a result of severe infestation. Secondary infections in the chicken, are also a concern.

This would be like a human being having mites munching underneath their toe and finger nails! I can just imagine what a discomfort that would be.

You can also use some dish soap in the water if you don't have any Epsom Salt. I use it because, the sulphur in Epsom salt is deadly to mites. I am suggesting a variety of things you can use, some are easier to find than others. Coconut oil is also good for your hens legs as, featheredplanets, mentioned. But, I would use something a little more aggressive on your hen at least for the first two weeks. You may also, need to do this for other hens in the flock. Scaley leg mites will infest other hens, as well.

What ever therapy you chose, act quickly, as the hen is suffering much discomfort. Your hens will love you for this! :love

God Bless :)
