So I have 2 turkeys that are about 5 weeks old. The one is more energetic than the other. She assuming it’s a she will stand up when we come into the room and she’s eating and drinking but she just seems to lay down more than the other. Turkeys are very new to me my husband decided to bring them home so I have been trying to do research but I’m not sure. They were just recently moved to there own section of the brooder because the baby chicks I housed them with were starting to really peck at them. So I separated them but they can still see the others. Is there anything I can do or should be worried about

What are you feeding them? Chick starter is not an appropriate food for turkey poults.

Turkey poults should have a quality turkey or gamebird starter. My poults get a 28% protein turkey or gamebird starter. If there happen to be chicks in with them, they all get the turkey or gamebird starter.

It isn't just the protein level that is important. Turkey poults also require higher concentrations of lysine, methionine and niacin than do chicks. Chick starter does not have the levels of lysine, methionine and niacin that turkeys require.

Well there could be the problem then, I was told at the Tsc store when asking about what type of food should they be on they said that this DuMour chick starter of 24 % protein would be what I needed. I figured that it being a big farm town they would know. I will go and get some other feed with higher protein. I will also continue putting the niacin in there water too! Thank you

TSC does not care about what your poults need. All they care about is their profit line. Depending on the manager, some TSC stores will special the proper feed for you because they carry Purina feed and Purina does make a quality 30% protein turkey or gamebird starter. This is something that TSC management has decided not to carry.

The other problem is that for the most part, TSC does not have employees that actually know about poultry and their needs. It is not just TSC but most chain feed stores operate the same way.

I am learning that very quickly with tsc. I will go check the other farm store and hopefully they will cart it. Do you know if I can give it to ducks as well? Also thank you for your time I greatly appreciate it!

The protein is a little on the high side for ducks. I would recommend a 20% protein all flock feed for the ducks. A quality 20% protein all flock feed will have the necessary niacin and other nutrients that ducks need without being too high in protein. It will also be fine for the turkeys once they are more than 12 weeks old.
