I'm new to ducklings and chicks and I have them in a brooder with a shallow dish of water. Do I need pebbles in there to keep them from drowning? Is it OK for the duck to wade in there as long as he wants? The temps are in the 90s here without the heat lamp, so they looked very hot, and I want to let him swim to cool off.

Congratulations on ducky! More info please... How deep dish, where's the lamp over the brooder, how old, how many, supervised??? Do you have a pic of your setup?

The pic's too blurry.
There's one duck, 4 chickens, they are all a day old. They are in the same room but not being constantly supervised. The dish is about the size of a dinner plate and is about an inch deep. The heat lamp is in the corner, over the water dish.

sorry but i dont let my babies swim in the brooder the brooder is for their saftey and haveing something they could drown in is not safe, but you could still do it.i would use like anything that could work as a step.

Ducklings, water dish and chicken chicks usually means soaking wet, cold chicken chicks. Mine get their water from a quart sized chick waterer, even then the chicks will get too wet.
