Is this polish coloring always a cockerel?

Hello-

New to chickens and new to this message board, but we have learned a ton from reading many of your thoughtful questions and replies. We have an approx 16 week old polish that we adore but are worried is likely a cockerel (attempted crowing). My question is whether those with experience with polish have seen this coloration before in a pullet? My thought is that this bird is in the black crested white polish realm. On the Polish chicken message board description of black crested white it says:

Another thing, when they are bred, alot of the male chicks are almost black with white blotches throughout their body and stay that way as they grow. These birds are about half of the flock of chicks that are hatched. I have yet to get a black splotchy pullet."

Now I'd say our bird's body is white with black splotches, but does the same hold true?

I don't think Polish are general "sex linked" by color. I've never heard of that.

From here it appears to be a hen. Boys have pointy head feathers rather than poofs. Can we see a better close up of its head?

Alternatively, check out feathersite.com at the Polish pictures so you can see the difference in crests on hens and roos.

Even though some hens will crow... if it's crowing... it's likely a roo

Maybe it wasn't trying to crow... maybe it was just clearing it's throat

i have a golden polish roo about the same age as yours and his crest is like a mohawk, I Have 3 polish hens, one white crested black , one buff and one golden and they all have a crest like yours
IMHO you have a hen

Thanks for the replies! Unfortunately I don't have a better picture available tonight. Maybe I'll have a photo shoot tomorrow morning. I agree that the poofy crest sure looks like it belongs on a pullet... but the silent crowing today still has me wondering. I guess I'll wait for some actual noise before trying to re-home this one.

the feather top knot looks more like a pullet's to me. Interesting coloration by the way. The males have a more raggedy looking top knot while the females is more full and nice. Also the legs dont look as sturdy as a males. I vote pullet

I know most of the time crowing makes it a roo but I have a hen who crows and acts like a rooster in "every" way. I know she is a hen because I watched her lay an egg (the egg was weird with a leathery shell and odd shape), so I know she is a hen but she does not think so. All my roosters hate her. Go figure.

SILENT crowing??? LOL Sounds like it is just clearing it's throat... trying to move food around in its crop. I'd say then that it is a pullet
