Hi everyone,

We've been looking around this site for the past 3 months or so. Ordered our chicks from Murray McMurray, and also checked the box allowing for them to send a free surprise bird (later realizing they usually send roosters). Well, we ordered 8 chicks (7 girls and a roo) and this free bird. I tried my best to double check the sexing, but being our first time owning chickens, Im not sure how I did. Anyways, it appears the birds are indeed 7 females and a male, and the surprise bird seemed to be a female as well (double set of feathers when a chick). Anyways, they are not 6 weeks old and today it appears that the surprise bird is a male. It was being very aggressive towards two of the girls and had them cowering up in the window sill of the coop unable to come down (every time they did it would chase them biting at the tail feathers). Then... It sounded like it was attempting to crow. We pulled it out and separated into a different area, now the other birds are calm and happy again.

Anyways, sorry for the long post, wanted to give some background. Also, we think the bird is a Black Minorca, which makes it even harder for me to tell what sex it is. Please give it a guess and let us know if we have to re-home this mostly friendly bird.

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the breed, nor am I super experienced in sexing *but* for a red comb, I'd expect it to be bright red if it were a roo. *Typically* hatcheries will note that you have all pullets except for one male, and send another pullet, but I also have never ordered from Murray McMurray.

I see what you mean. Never come across this breed before.
But the intimidating of the girls?? That's very typical of roosters. And it's only 6 weeks? Now I'm so confused lol
