Is this sneezing or just chick noises? Anything of concern?

Hi all

Here is a video of my cream legbar, 3 weeks old she will occasionally make these little pip noises that to my ear sound like a little puff of air. Is this sneezing? Its never louder than this its almost always completely air sounding. And not super often.

They had their first day out at coop yesterday so lots of sandy dust bathing and got the hemp bedding in the brooder today after 3 weeks of puppy pads. She is active eating, drinking, preening, flying around, and otherwise completely normal no wheezing, no weird poops, not lethargic, or puffed up etc. I also checked and her eyes are bright and clear, no discharge, no runny nose etc. It doesnt look like anything is stuck in her nostrils but theyre so small its hard to see up them. They're on medicated kalmbach starter feed with grit and occasional black soldier fly larvae as treats just to get them used to me. Is some sneezing normal? Is this even sneezing? I haven't heard chick sneezing before so not sure what I'm looking for.

She's been making this noise since week one though with no other behaivors and just here and there but it seems a little bit more often today. Trying to keep my anxiety in check could just be the new bedding plus all the sand and ash from dust bathing out in the coop yesterday for the first time. Thanks all!

Hi!

Yes, sounds like that's sneezing. Sometimes they just get something stuck in their throats or nostrils and it takes them awhile to clear it. Without any of the other symptoms that you've mentioned, I'd just see how it's doing in 24 hours and watch for any other symptoms to pop up. Hopefully, they just clear whatever it is and will stop doing that!

Good luck. That sure is a cutie!

Thank you! They've had alot of change the last few days, raised heat plates Friday night, outside in the sandy coop for a few hours yesterday with lots of first time dust bathing, and new hemp bedding from 3 weeks of puppy pads this afternoon so I think like you said I just need to let them settle for a day or two. I used a cotton ball to wipe her beak and nostrils with a tiny bit of VetRX since I read its essentially like our Vaporub but for chickens haha, shes also the most voracious eater of all of them and the chick crumbles are so dusty after they've pecked at them all day. Hoping as she acclimates to the hemp bedding or whatever shes got stuck clears that is stops! Thank you for the reassurance!

Sorry to force a picture of poop on you but was finally able to catch my sneezer pooping to know for sure it was hers. That white is pretty regular for chicks right? Her sneezing seems less today but shes still sneezing occasionally like 2 or 3 times in a 10 minute span. Should I treat for something now or just continue to wait and see if any other symptoms pop up?

The white is urates (like pee), it's normal for chickens of all ages.
That's what I thought but figured it wouldn't hurt to check. Hipefully I dont have to stop using the hemp bedding they got yesterday it was so expensive and I have alot of it 😂 and dont wanna go back to changing puppy pads lol

That looks like a great poop!

It wouldn't hurt to give them all a day of vitamin water. As long as you're not hearing any chest rattling, runny nose or eyes, etc., she's probably just got something stuck. Vitamins are good boost regardless but that ones' expelling more energy than the rest so good to keep her healthy otherwise!

Ok cool, when I change their water this afternoon I'll add some. So far I haven't noticed anyone else sneezing it seems to be just her and she does preen alot so I also checked under her wings and no issues with parasites that I can see.

IF others start to sneeze what would be the recommendation? I have a fully stocked first aide kit but I do usually have to order stuff so would like to order now just in case so I'm not waiting on it if it ends up not being nothing and need something I dont already have. And then if nothing ill just have whatever it is on hand if I dont already.

You can go ahead and put the vitamins in their water, not just for her, for all of them. If you worry, you could give it to them every other day. If you give it too often or too much, they'll get diarrhea. Been there, done that! :)

We use Poultry Cell for waterers, and Nutri-Drench for direct dosage for a really sick one.
