Is this the shade of red that the cone should be before she starts laying or will it get brighter?

Yes. The Comb is taking on a nice deep red. She's not far away now.

I can't believe how quickly my chickens' combs and wattles grow! A few of them seem to get huge just over night

I have 2 more just like these 2 and I'm new to raising backyard chickens! When I bought them last week, I was told that they would start laying anyday! I can't wait!!
