Is this usable as a coop?

Definitely looks usable to me. Tell your DH that the birds WILL notice that the floor is not level, but it is easy to fix: you just put a baby shoe on one of their feet so that it raises them up a little bit and they then feel level !

Bottomline, DH has got work to do! I love the little shoe idea. Just make certain that floor tilts away from the creek or you'll be sending your eggs down the river to your neighbors!

Okay, thanks for the advice. I meant we were going to seal up the vents with hardware cloth. Thought I typed that, but now I see that I didn't.

There are two windows in front and one in back, but no glass in either, just an open hole when you open the little shutters. I'm wondering if hardware cloth would be sufficient to use to cover those if we close the shutter doors and latch them together at night?

We already have 11 chicks that are 14 weeks now. They are living in TCH (temporary chicken housing) under our back porch. FYI- our back porch is VERY far off the ground, you can easily walk under there, so it's actually pretty sweet for chickens and very secure. We will keep this area in case anyone goes broody or gets sick/injured later.

The building is already about 6 x 8...but I have this sneaking feeling that my flock might increase in size next year. SHHHH! Don't tell dear husband! That water is just a creek, no alligators, but the occasional water snake. The water is usually about 20 feet farther down the slope.

We could move the building some without too much difficulty. And YES there are fish in there.

But usually there is a 5 year old boy in there, so that sort of puts a damper on the fishing.

I'll have to dig around in the attic to see how many pairs of baby shoes are up there....

What you have to work with is great. I have an old lean tube in really bad shape. Its coming along though. I found out by kicking it that it almost fell down LOL. I had to replace some of the suports and it doesnt even shake now. Here are some pics of how bad this was.

I have a new roof on but need to shingle it. My daughter has the camra so i will take more pics of the finish project soon. Like I said you have a good shed to start with. Hope to see your finish coop soon . Good luck Scotty

I would TOTALLY use that shed. One question - does the creek rise in the spring? You don't want flooding issues.

Definitely wire up the windows and you might want to consider some plexiglass or even regular glass for sliding in when the weather gets bad.

I love the look!
