Hi, I am new member to backyard chickens. I have 9 chickens for past 4 years. They have been healthy until last 6 months noticed one chicken losing bottom feathers and has discharge stuck to vent. She is eating and drinking and free ranging fine. Seemed to come and go, but now it is worse and her other feathers around neck are not as full. Now noticing some of other chickens have some mild discharge around vent but nothing dramatic. Just want to prevent further disease. Not sure what it is. Chickens otherwise doing well. Thank you for any help/recs you all can give!

Welcome To BYC

Looks like a lot of stuck on poop. I'd give her a good cleaning up. For large poop clumps, you can crush them up with pliers if necessary taking care not to pull or pinch the skin. Then give her a good washing up.
You can apply a little NuStock cream to the exposed tissue to help heal it and protect it from poop irritation.

Once she's cleaned up, monitor any discharge that you may see. Vent Gleet is a yeast infection and is usually a thick white yeasty smelling continual discharge.

Feather loss around the neck looks like it may be from some picking/plucking. Check her over for any lice/mites. If you find any, dust her and the flock with a Permethrin based poultry dust, spray your coop/housing with a Permethrin based poultry spray.

Have you ever dewormed? It would be a good idea to take a sampling of poop to your vet if you have one so they can run a fecal float to see if worms are a problem.

Thank you so much for the advice. Really appreciate it and will do the recommended cleaning and application. Do you have a brand of permethrin for dusting and spraying that you have used and liked? Thanks again!

I usually pick up what's available at TSC. I think they have Gardenstar poultry and garden dust. The container is cardboard like, so I put the dust in an old sock, use that like a powder puff to dust the chickens, just tap it all over and work the dust down through the feathers to the skin. Make sure to get around the vent and under the wings. I then store the filled sock in a glass mason jar with tight fitting lid. Be sure to label it so you know what's in there.

For the spray, I buy Permethrin 10 concentrate which I mix according to the directions. A bottle of concentrate will last a long time. You can mix in a garden sprayer or spray bottle, depends on how large of an area you are going to treat. I keep a spray bottle mixed up usually and spray my nesting boxes and roosting bars every couple of months or so. BUT if I had lice/mites in the housing or on the birds, then I'd treat/spray/dust in 5-7day intervals to eliminate the bugs.

Oh wow…thanks so much! Super helpful! Appreciate all your help.

I think the Gordons or Martins permethrin 10 concentrate is mixed with water, 1 tsp (5ml) per quart of water, in a spray bottle or garden sprayer. TSC may sell those in 8 or 16 ounce containers.
