I've never had molting chickens before, Is this what it looks like or do they have mites or something?? Any opinions welcome, just want to know what is happening with them!

Could be. Molting happens in the fall. What season is it where you are? That also could be rooster damage. Do you have a male?

So, if it is fall, molting, if you have a rooster, mating damage. Unless it is fall and you have a rooster, then it could be both.

Could be molt but it also looks like rooster damage, do u have a roo?

I do have 2 roosters but I've only seen him grab the hens up near their heads, so I had assumed it wasn't him, it is early spring here so maybe it is the rooster! ugh I'm not sure anymore :th

Hmm, sounds possible. Maybe try getting your hens an apron and see if it improves?

It absolutely looks like rooster damage. They grab with the beak on the back of the hens head, but since she rarely sits entirely still, he usually slips around a bit while he mounting and his feet and nails do the damage on the lower back/base of tail. A hen apron/saddle might help. How many hens do you have for two roosters? It could be over mating if you don't have enough hens, but often the more submissive hens become 'favorites' and get more attention and end up looking rough.
