Is trying turkeys worth it?

I live in the poultry capital of the world n also we have several groups of wild turkeys. The farm I live on has raised chickens in houses and hobby coupes all over the farm. I have really been interested in trying my hand with turkeys. However I don't enjoy throwing $ in the wind. Is it worth trying or is blackhead inevitable?

I found raising turkeys annoying, and expensive. The silly things were always cold, so I couldn't let them free range. Also, the tiny baby stage was HORRID, since if you don't have a broiler chick in with them, they won't eat on their own.

I think it took mine a week before they ate without encouragement.

The geese I tried this year were much better. THEY know how to eat by themselves (just like chicks). Also, once a decent size, I don't think they can get cold. Marvelous! AND, maybe 80% of their food intake was my lawn grass.

But, some people love their turkeys.

I would ask around, and see if anyone near you has tried turkey, and ask them if they had disease issues.

Then, try small, buy maybe 5, along with a few broiler chicks to teach them how to eat, and just see if you like it.

Blackhead is a local issue. YOu would need to contact the county ag extension for information on whetheror not you have blackhead in your area. If you do, house and coop and run separately, with NO overlap.
