Isbar thread

Ilihani Coffee, here are my two Isbar babies hatched from your eggs. I have a black and a splash. I'm thinking I have a splash cockerel and a black pullet. Thoughts?

Splash chick to the far left, black chick to the far right
In the red light it looks like that's what you have when you compare the two, but the photo of the black (not in red lighting) looks suspicious. Keep watching "her" as I can't remember how old they must be now?

No more suspects! LOL. I already have a brooder full of Australorp cockerels and one pullet when I needed the opposite. Sigh. What color eggs can I reasonably expect from the offspring of Isbar roosters, Olive Egger hens (your Isbar/Marans girls), and Easter Eggers? Surprise rainbow specials? I guess I can market them as that....

I have a roo from GFF new line that has attacked my kids and even me once. Of coarse he is my first pick for a breeder. Any thoughts if I should keep him until I get the next generation or just pick a better tempered one?

Personality is definitely heritable. I'll tolerate ONE attack, at which time we have a "Come To Jesus Meetin'" if it happens again they are out of here. Especially a LF.

Now that said, if you have a way of keeping him separated, I find most of my roosters are much less aggressive when housed in "boys only" pens.

I do have one little @$#%-# sebright cock that goes after me whenever my back is turned, but he actually protects my son from other birds, so he stays for now. Whenever he gets too rude I catch him and take his spurs off, then make him "snuggle" with me while I do yard work. It usually quiets him down for a while.

But I do not tolerate aggression towards my kids. Even a little roo can cause major damage if they get them just right

I wouldn't breed him. As chambe94 said, the CTJMeeting would look like instantly taking him down to the ground on his back and hold him there until he stops struggling completely. Then I'd walk away and if he does it again, chicken soup. Disposition is definitely heritable, and it's important.

I second that. Besides, we don't want bad dispositions in our Isbars. Friendliness and sweetness are some of the hallmark traits.

I've never been challenged by any of my cock/erels...Isbar, Rhodebar, black and blue copper Marans. I did have a punk hormonal HRIR that picked on the the younger males, but he never looked that way at me and made fine dinner.

I have between 20 and 30 cockerels and he is the only one to have attacked a person. They terrorize each other but no one else has attacked me or the kids. In the past I have had maran Roos and a jersey giant that were absolute terrors to me and the kids. I had to go to the car with a stick to defend myself until they went to freezer camp. This guy has attacked a few of my kids on several occasions and me once. It's not bad like the other I mentioned but he goes to great lengths to follow the kids a good distance away from the flock waiting to strike, even if I'm walking with them. I put him in his place when he attacked me and so far he had not tried it again but he will stalk the kids even when I'm with them. The kids have not bothered the chickens to much prior to the attacks. Occasionally they were with me while I did chores. If this is not characteristic of Isbar behavior then into the pot he will go. That being said what do you all use to scald your chickens for defeathering? I have a few others I'm going to be doing at the same time. I was going to get a 40 at stock pot but someone said a cooler works well?
