Isbar thread

Yeah. I would have crossed the 2 lines and brodened the gene pool. Who knows how inbred the flock was before they even imported it. My swedish flower bust outta their eggs with avengence haha and the isbar barely wanna pip. Im guessing they're just weak like yokohamas
I am not sure they had any of the original line left by the time they imported the second line.

I agree that the original line is hard to find -- It would be neat to get a listing someplace of where they may still be available. I got my first Isbars from someone who I don't think ever subsequently got new ones from GFF. Samantha Kellerman at Highview Farms:

gorgeous chickens...

IF I wanted more I would consider going there -- but they would be related to mine. I got some chicks from Omega Hills Farms - but they were the different kind -- gorgeous and friendly birds -- friendlier than my originals - but I wonder size and a few other characteristics if they had some later influences.

And as has been pointed out already - the less related the pair is - the greater probability of better hatching due to some genetic variety, IMO -
TheTropix on here has Isbars - sells eggs -- She may be a good one to ask - she has some of the dark-eyed originals for sure...so I guess that is where I would go to get more - if I were getting more Isbars. ;O)

The original line is out there. I have a breeding group of all original line that I sourced from 3 different breeders and they have been very hearty. I also have a breeding group of original and new lines mixed. I know Ihilani Coffee has original line birds. I am not sure off hand who else keeps just the original line, but there are some breeders that have been breeding toward the original line characteristics even though their breeders are mixed lines and have beautiful birds that could add much needed diversity. The important thing is to source birds from at least 2 sources, preferably more, when setting up a breeding program.

Brilliant, and hopefully people will keep the originals going and they will be available - (forever!)

Are the second imports not as pure as the first?

The second import is not as uniform as the first. From the ones I have raised of the second import, and pictures of other's second import birds, I believe I see influences from other breeds, perhaps Ameraucana and/or Marans, in some of the birds. It is important to note that not all flocks in the preservation group flocks in Sweden are as uniform as the birds that came here with the first import. However, in my conversations with members of that preservation group in Sweden, we have identified some characteristics present in the second import lines that are not seen in the preservation group flocks.
