Isbar thread

Svarthöna :

Unfortunately it seems that many breeders in my area were crossbreeding with Araucanas to make the egg color "better", but not thinking about how this messes with comb and type of the birds

just take a look at the parents and if they carry pea comb just dont get chicks from them... dont know how people tend to get the color better? I mean the Blue egg gene O is just that a single allele.. its not a polygenic traint that can be enhanced

That's how I decided that I don't want to buy those "Isbars", peacombed Isbars are just not right.

That's one of the reasons why I prefer to buy eggs from flocks where I saw the parents. But it's okay, I'm not in a hurry and will totally wait a year or two until I find birds I want to add to my flock.
I'm not sure how the crossing in for egg color enhancing was planned. Maybe the flock was Oo and they wanted to breed out the o with birds which are sure to be pure for colored eggs. Or it was a 'it lays a green egg so it must be the same breed'-thing. Don't know and didn't ask.
(Since some eggs are more pale/pastel toned than others I'm not so sure if the O gene is just a there vs. not there kind of thing. I know that it's said to be that way, but where does the variation in color intensity come from then?)

klf73 congratulations to your birds!

How are they now? Still shy?

Well, I really don't know their age. They have been here a couple of weeks and have been handling them frequently. They aren't as shy but one of the girls is a trouble maker.. always trying to escape

dh will be making their new enclosure this week with enough room .... I will try to get pics soon

A simple, yet time consuming(waiting for F2 hens to lay from hatch) single comb F1xF1 would do the trick...

are you in the US? what is their temperment like? My smaller roo is only going to stick around in case of emergency....like something happens to the other. He is not a nice boy

. My other ones are still a little shy but are fine while being held and they don't seem to mind hanging out for petting, but that boy is something else....
