ISO Eggpert Identifiers....

I don’t normally stress too much about who’s laying the eggs but I have a situation... My son wants to hatch a few eggs and my darling husband aided him in obtaining all necessary equipment because he is the “coolest ever not like mom”.

Yesterday and today 2 eggs appeared with a color/size/shape combo I’ve never seen before.
Can anyone help me match the eggs to the girls? I’m completely dense about it and when I look at the photos online the eggs I have don’t seem to match the breeds. I’ve either messed up the breed, my eyes are not seeing colors well, or I’m a complete Chicken Dummy.

I’m attaching pics of the eggs - flash on/ flash off in an area with natural light on a white paper towel. I numbered them to avoid confusing myself more.
I tossed some pics of the girls in collage form. It turns out the breeders daughter (sold us the babies because the mother was stuck at work/traffic) told us incorrect breeds and sexes.

I welcome all comments, criticism, guidance, all of it. I may not have been the adult male who brought home chickens on a whim but I’m stuck with him and now enjoy them. The BYC community slapped me around when I made mistakes and guided me thru the corrections. My flock is a safer, healthier, happier place so don’t hold back! Watch out for my companion post in the breeding forum “I agreed to 12 eggs in a bator which ones should I chose”. LOL I’m sure there will be more to come after I finish the Brinsea manuals...

What difference would it make which eggs would hatch. Do you have have multiple roosters that are paired up with certain hens???

Law of averages still stands that about 50% of your hatch will be male, and the other 50% female. Not much that can be done about that at this time even though some scientist are trying to devise a method of determining sex early in incubation cycle. Then Destroy the possible cockerels before they hatch. I totally do not agree with that tech.
I don't have the absolute answers to world's chicken problems. I do have my opinions, but they are not necessarily financially wise.

If you want to incubate just certain eggs, (from certain hens) you can mark the vents of those hens with food color. The traces of color should appear as streaks on those eggs.
Also be aware that most peeps do not achieve 100% hatch rate. After that survival is also not 100%.

OMG I was totally unclear after I re read.. no I would not destroy the Roos pre hatch. Were trying to figure out who’s laying what eggs then decide which breed to even attempt in the incubator. The goal being 1-2 successful hatches of a cold hearty, generally nice bird. I was going to ask which one of my hens crossed with an EE would be the best fit but would post in the breeding section. I’m currently unaware of any genetic health issues. First step is figuring out who laid what egg. I know the fibro dun and cemani are NOT cold hearty so I would prefer to not even place them in the incubator.

Then go the food color route. Decide which hens you want to use for eggs, and only color their vents. No streak means eggs are for eating. Streaked means you keep for incubating.

I agree with the food color route. The problem with trying to identify eggs is that unless you see them lay it you might never know which is which. Sometimes the same hen can lay a slightly different color egg from time to time. Even same breeds aren't guaranteed to lay eggs the same shade.

I’ve never done that and don’t know how!
Any tips or tricks? I’m imagining my girls, self, and coop will be multi colored for weeks!
I have a handful of girls very vocal and wiggly when I do the“do you have bugs” checks.
I’m trying my best but my chicken tasing skill set is hovering a little above epic fail!

You could take some vaseline, or vegetable oil and add color to small quantity. Then with your gloved finger dipped in it smear some onto vent area. You may need to experiment somewhat until it works well for you. Remember that chickens use vent for everything. If they express many gumdrops before they lay egg, the dye may be depleted.
You can also search out threads here and read how others may have had better success.
Maybe others here have some tips of their own.

I have gloves, Vaseline, and food coloring. I think it’s a mental thing now. I panic if the chicken I’m touching squacks. I’m paranoid i will hurt them and they will hate me.
I grew up in the city. I had a chia pet and some sea monkeys. This is all so new to me
I checked some other threads but had to stop. I have a tendency to over research to avoid the task. Multiple shades of lipstick appears popular. I wish there was a flow chart or app for chicken stuff.

I would just select the big brown eggs if I were you. Those will come from the red stars, RIRs, Jersey Giants, barred rocks, Orpingtons and Brahmas.

If there are specific hens you want eggs for hatching from, like the Easter egger, then use the lipstick trick.
