Our silkie chick that we raised ended up being a rooster, we are not allowed to have roosters and of course that was my favorite chicken. We found him a new home but if I can I'd like to find a hen to replace him. The rest of my flock is standard sized, and we are restricted to to five total, I have 4 hens. Is it even possible to find a single silkie hen?

I don't think getting a single chick is a good idea, raising it alone and then dealing with introductions to the big girls seems pretty unfair. How would you go about finding a single hen for sale? I'd be willing to drive an hour or more to pick up, and I don't need anything show quality but I'd prefer a blue or splash colored one if I can find it.

I've tried googling for breeders in my area and a few will sell hatching eggs, is it worth it to reach out to breeders? I'm checking local facebook groups etc but I'm beginning to think I'm looking for a needle in a haystack.

This is fair season. County fairs, state fairs abound and most have chicken shows!! You will meet silkies people for sure at all of them. Google helped us find county fairs in every county around us, as our fair doesn't do poultry.
That said, your current chickens will likely not appreciate a new bird coming in. It would be a good idea to read articles and threads on integrating newcomers.

@SueT thanks! I never even thought of that. I know our closest fair has passed but there may be more up coming, I will check.

Yes, I plan to read up some more and make sure we can set thing up as best we can before bringing another one home.

What breed do you currently have? Silkies are always on the low end of the pecking order when placed in flocks with larger, more aggressive/less docile birds.

I've got a two Wyandottes (a Silver Laced and Gold Laced) a Buff Orpington and an EE. My Silkie would hang mostly with the Orpington and EE, but they all grew up together.
