Issues or problems taking chicks to school?

I would tend to lean more on the side of the parent there... I grew up with severe allergies to almost everything but air and water... and most ppl

Even now I am so allergic to my chickens that I can only be with them for a short time before I have an asthmatic episode or start sneezing an watering. So yes that is a valid point, but it is kind of sad that the kids couldnt see the babies growing.

I guess I wouldnt have minded except that this was a result of an incident YEARS ago. =/

It would have simply been a matter of sending home a note to parents to check for allergies in the classroom. I guess I was just annoyed that I set it all up and got the eggs 'cooking' and then had to go back and get them. Poor planning maybe?

Camelot - sorry to hear that your chickies were expelled!

This would only be for a short visit on Friday morning before the kids leave for Easter break.

I still have to get more information from my friend about what the exact plan is. I just don't want some child to go home sneezing, wheezing or breaking out in hives or whatever and end up with some irate parent after me. I'm going to make sure that the SCHOOL is okay with this first. Let them go after the school instead of me! You can't get blood from a turnip!

I'm not a mom, but I "play one on TV" - (I take care of my SO's son 1/2 the time. His mom lives close by and has joint custody.) So these school regulation issues are murky water for me.

I love doing stuff like this with kids because its so fun to watch them discover stuff. Not to mention the fun questions that come up!

Allergies are a valid concern but there are parents out there who are freakish about [suspected] germs and overreact to bringing the outside, in. Some people are just that way. Don't get dirty, don't touch anything, handwashing 14 times a day. Half the reason we get sick is because we don't allow our bodies the chance to build up a natural immunity to certain things.

I too brought my chicks to my son's 1st grade class last year, at about 6-8 wks old. I packed sanitizer, lots of newspaper for the floor, and about 6 of my chicks. My light Brahma hen, Snow, may be making a trip to NYC to see Martha Stewart with me. It will be her 2nd field trip.

Oh my Sparkles....U and I think alike !!! I'd be concerned about what my CHICKS would catch !!!! LOL
DaughterofEve.....I thought you "squirted each chick with hand sanitizer after returning them to their cage" ROFLOL !!! THAT'S WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE !!! But I'm parenoid !

I realize that this is an ancient thread, but I'm hoping that some of you with answers are still around!

When bringing chicks into a school for a visit, do you do anything for heat? Water bottles, hot potatoes, etc.? I'm planning to bring our chicks in to my son's school to show his Kindergarten class and the Pre-K class (no touching, just looking!), and I'm wondering how many weeks old the chicks should be when I bring them in.

Hi! I'm new to this site and chickens. :). I have 9 day old chicks and was wondering how old they should be before I take them by to my kids school for their class to see them? I've read this thread just curious about heat needed and the best age. Thanks!

My kindergarten kiddo was learning about 'ck' endings so I brought a very few of the babies I have
enough to fit nicely in a cardboard box

I had the kids use hand sanitizer before and after touching them

Towards the end I had to put them up as I could tell the chicks and ducks were starting to feel stressed
