it all! ::sigh::The whole intro thing...

Just spent 10 min typing an intro... and computer decided to go out for coffee and eat it all! ::sigh::

The quick version -

I am a homemaker in Virginia. Trying to raise 2 delinqent teenagers (one mine, other my BF's ward he took in). Both are special needs for emotional/conduct reasons. Good kids most of the time. Well... some of the time. Well... suffice it to say I have not yet decided to kill them.

We already have 2 schipperkes, 1 moose that my BF swears is a dog and that literally eats us out of house and home (as in the walls, doors, carpeting, etc) if she does not get her prozac, a neurotic cat, and 3 psyhcotic and spoiled parrots. Oh... and about 40 large koi.

So... I figured we need some chickens of course!

We are currently chickenless... but planning away. I got the honey looking at coop plans I drew up for materials lists. I got my daughter looking at muppets (those darn silkies are just too cute!). I myself am researching some nice egg laying bantams. Currently I am considering Favorelles and Easter Eggs.

In any case... "Hi all" from the funny farm and I look forward to any help you can all offer!

I just hope I will not go crazy from them. I was all excited about the 14,000 gallon koi pond when we moved in here. Any idea just how much "fun" a large koi pond is? Little did I know!!!!

Where should I post to ask opinions on breeds? The breeds section I presume?

Chickens are pretty self-sufficient provided they have good shelter, feed, water and get their coop cleaned out every so often. Of course, little things pop up here and there as with any animal (injuries, etc). DH and I started with 6 hens a couple years ago (no prior experience)...we now have 28 hens and 2 roosters! Chickens are awesome!
