It finally happened the neighbors dog got out

In my rural neighborhood all the dogs roam but none of them are chicken killers. We've all agreed to talk with each other if there's ever a problem with a dog, but so far since we all have chickens and all our dogs are trained with chickens, there has been no problem. Guess we're lucky. Just make 100% sure that the dog you're shooting was really the culprit... I've known of some tragic misunderstandings where the wrong dog was shot, and would never want that to happen to my roaming kid.

That is very much the setting I grew up in. World has changed a bit but with good amount of work I will have my neighborhood / rural area with conflicts minimalized. Keeping / getting communication channels open appears be the first and likely biggest hurdle. Some parties seem hell bent on being unpleasant be they dog or chicken owner but that just seems to be their way.

I have talked with 3 of my neighbors and we all have lost birds and rabbits. One neighbor has taken a shot at the dog but missed. I have set traps that the animal shelter has loaned me but the dog will go crazy and break out. We all have a feeling who the dogs belong to but they are not nice people and I have been warned not to talk to them. Animal Control has had several complaints about them and they have trouble talking to them as well.
I have reinforced the trap and have a plan to move it inside the garage once I catch something. Wish me luck.... that I catch it and don't get hurt..... but if I get bite, then maybe I will have a better case for putting the dog down.
