I remember 99. I remember running through the yard, organdy lace trailing, soft music coming from the trees. Oh, yes, I remember 99.

I remember 109. I remember walking through the yard, hose trailing behind, the sound of cicadas humming in the trees.

I remember 119. I remember coming into the house, going straight to a cold shower, and at the end of the shower, seeing a red face in the mirror. How could it still be red??? I remember not drying off with a towel, just putting on a baggy t-shirt and walking through the house wet, hoping the A/C would cool me down, drinking two glasses of ice water.

I remember 120. I remember it like it was today.

NEW ZEALAND, I'M HEADED YOUR WAY!!!!

ooooh man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the cicadas rung a bell for me. out at the barn you can hear them. loud and clear.. the heat waving around you. yuck.

Its even miserable at night. What do ya'all do about keeping the coop cool at night?

It'd be much more tolerable if there was only a breeze. The air is stagnate and there's no relief even in the shade. I feel like hiking up to the ice caves and taking the hens with me

Yesterday I tried the frozen bottled water, the mister, a shallow tub of cool water for them to stand in, but they wanted nothing to do with any of it! So I thought I would try and cool them from the inside. I added ice to their water, then gave them a teeny tiny dollop of vanilla ice cream and they went nuts for it! One grabbed a huge bite and took off running with it. I kept expecting brain freeze, but they gobbled it down no problem.

Today is expected to be even hotter around Puget Sound, so i have yogurt in the freezer, shaved ice which they like to crunch on, and I'm going to try to freeze a slice of watermelon and see how they take to that.

As for me...I'll be near the mister trying to stay cool.

Fans. Crucial. Can make all the difference for them.

It's 'only' in the 80's here lately but the air is disgustingly tropical with dew points in the 70's and at times not moving in the least and everyone/everything is miserable. The fans in the coop and out really help. Of course, also cold water, cool fruit treats, electrolytes if any panting, no heavy food for them during the heat of the day.

In the worst weather (we've had 115 heat indexes but not lately), I take my feathered friends in the basement till things improve but I only have 2.....

That is horribly hot for your area. The weather extremes all over place in recent years are worrisome. Too bad we can't package up some of this heat and lend it to NZ and relieve them of some of the cold there!
