I have 6 buff orpington's, 12 weeks old. One has been musterious. It is bigger, darker back, bigger comb and waddle. But no spur. This A.M. as I am preparing the pen I hear what seems to be "strained crowing" coming from the hen house. I can't pinpoint who it was, but I'll bet it was the mystery chick. Is it possible that it could have waited 12 weeks to start crowing? We do not have any chicks but these 6. Thans for any info.

If you posted pictures of the mysterious chick in question, we could probably help figure out what's going on. Take some pictures of that one and some of the others for comparison.

I just heard one crow for the first time yesterday that was 11 weeks old, so yeah, I imagine one could wait another week... I was SO hoping he was a hen! His tail feathers were sorta suspiciously NOT straight and pointed, more softer looking and curved at the end, but hey, hope springs eternal...

Sure. There is no timetable, or firm committment date you can write on your calendar for crowing to commence.

12 weeks is only 3 months, if you choose to look at it that way. That is actually early by some standards.

Thanks for your help. My husband heard him for the first time this AM. I have not figured out how to post pics yet, but he (I guess) is different from the others. Now what to do with him. I just can't keep him. Thanks again. Gram:/
