It really seems illegal to trap/'dispatch' any predator (update)

In answer to what i think your questions is: are we all on here talking about how we ignored the law in favor of our chickens? no. Where i live, i am perfectly free to shoot predators, most of which (raccoons and possums) don't have a season. Honestly, i can legally shoot people who are after my chickens. I'm just not in a hurry to do so. Shooting hawks is forbidden all over the U.S., but the state laws vary dramatically on everything else.

Yes, alway check your state laws, anything I post about trapping or killing predators , it is Legal in my State. Now that doesn't mean it Legal in all States.

One reason I only set traps near the pens, as we do have trapping season.

I don't break wildlife laws, and release any bird of prey. Also destroy all coons and etc, as its illegal to relocated them.

It used to be very straightforward in the AR game and fish manual, nusience furbearers (raccoons and foxes mainly) were legal for the landowner to dispose of to protect their own property. In the past couple of years they decided, hey we can make some money off of this, so now the game and fish manual says that you have to buy a "depredation" permit to do the same thing.

The trick is enforcement, there's really not anyone to enforce their new little money-making scheem. Trust me, raccoons are faaaar from being an endangered species. The only reason for the rule change was to make money from the permits.

IF they really really wanted to enforce the new rules, they'd probably have to require permits to buy traps.

Don't know if you live in a rural area or not but I would suggest you do whatever it takes to protect what belongs to you and just don't "broadcast" any info about what needs to take place. Country people are known for their common sense when it involves matters best handled without outside intervention!

Here in NJ it is written in the game laws that any predator killing livestock can be dispatched. The only one you have to report is a coyote (yeah I'll do that). You have an investment in your birds and you should take any measure to protect them. You can't kill any bird of prey though, that's federal, and the fines are pretty steep.
