Good morning!

Been lurking for almost 2 years on the forums - basically since we decided to buy land and homestead. We moved out to the country last summer and started planning and planning and planning and etc.

Finally someone told us "You'll never FEEL ready, just do it!" So we took the leap with a dozen EE from TSC at easter. Thought it was appropriate. We built an 8x12 chicken tractor. Then last month hubby was given 14 fertilized eggs from a family friend which we hatched out. We now have 10 babies in the brooder box (2 were not fertile, eggtopsy showed of the other 2 we lost 1 around 1 week. The other was fully formed just never pipped).

And thanks to all the great information here - Charlie and Darwin survived to become chicks 9 and 10 with assisted hatching.

The chicken math is about to begin. Of the chicks we have 2 female CCL 4 males and 4 OE which we think are all males. Pretty sure they are a maran mix of some sort but not positive. The flock they can from was quite diverse.

We hope to add BCM, welsummers, and maybe some BO to the mix. Our goal is to start growing our flock to around 100 once the perm coop is finished this fall. Then come the goats, pigs, rabbits. Thus the title....

So a huge thank you to this community for all the info and encourgement you didnt even realize you were dishing out!

HAPPY CHICKENIN' YA'LL!!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
What is the fate of all those cockerels?

We will keep at least one of the Cream Legbars for sure. Probably try to trade the others as a 2 for one rooster swap to diversify the CL gene pool. As for the OE, I am guessing at least a few may end up gracing the table. While we love our babies, we are a working homestead - tiny house and all!
