A couple of years ago some friends of my family were foolish enough to pick up a baby skunk they found in the yard. I say foolish because skunks are a huge carrier of rabies, for those who are unaware. So, here is this cute little kit all by itself. You would think that being farm folks who SHOULD know things or ask questions like, "I wonder where the momma is?" or "Where are the rest of the kits?". The should have used their heads and realized it was not a good sign that this little bugger was all by itself. They picked it up, took it in the house, cuddled it and made a big deal of this cute little anima. Later on that day, the vet was over and they were telling him about this cute thing, and asking if they could get the scent glands removed to keep as a pet. He immediately realized the signs were bad here and convinced them to let him take it for testing. Sure enough, the cute little thing had rabies, and all of the family had to undergo the injections that cost, I think, $10,000 PER PERSON!!! BUT the NY State Health Department picked up the tab because it was a wild animal. SO, perhaps other states have similar rules that would cover someone injurred in an attack like this one. If a state covers the tab for my foolish friends' family for picking up a kit, I would think that someone should cover the expense for people who are attacked in their homes by a rabid, wild animal.
