Thank you BackYard Chicken people! We had a 4 week old Cornish Cross whose legs collapsed. He just sat there on his heels, or keeled over on his side. I started giving him Polyvisol drops (no iron) twice a day, and propping him in front of food and water where he didn't have to compete with the other chicks. By golly, less than a week later, he started to stand up, and now, he can keep up with the flock! The only way I can tell which one he is is that he is smaller, and the toes on one foot are slightly deformed.
Thank you sooooooo much for this post!! I have a Barred Rock Rooster with this same problem. I'll start him on the Poly-Visol tomorrow morning first thing.
Two questions. Why does everyone say Poly-Visol (no iron)? Is iron bad for birds??
My Poly-Visol doesn't say "with iron" or "without iron" on the front label. But I noticed that ferrous sulfate is listed in the ingredients. Isn't that iron??
Any help will be deeply appreciated.
Hope y'all have a GREAT EVENING and a BEAUTIFUL DAY tomorrow!

overdose of iron in humans scars the intestinal tract and can be fatal. Probably the same for your chickens. Iron in most cases unless there is a deficiency is in most foods, and most tap water and well water has a good iron content. Never give Iron tabs to children unless a doctors tells you too.
Well your results are encouraging for me. I've had a pullet rir who hasn't been able to walk for about 5 weeks but she also has a cold. Hopefully when her cold is gone she will be able to absorb the vitamins and walk again.

Yes ferrous sulfate is iron. But the label on the regular Poly-Vi-Sol states that it is a stabilizer for one of the other vitamins, so it's probably present in a very small amount. The vitamin prep 'with iron" probably has a much larger amount.
